Work Philosophy Statement
My Work Philosophy Statement represents who I am and describes my goals as a media communicator.
Being a media communicator with a vast world that’s waiting at my fingertips, I am increasingly optimistic about what the future will hold and the type of change I can inspire with my words, photography, and graphic design. With this said, I can confidently say that I understand what I stand for and the work ethic I want to provide to a professional environment. As a media communicator, I strive to authentically and diligently pursue creative and diverse projects that are engaging to my audience.
Incorporating authenticity in my work is necessary, especially as a media communicator. Moran (2019) notes that “...trust relationships often rest on a sense of personal 'authenticity'—a belief that the journalist in question is a transparent person with whom the audience maintains shared interests and ideological beliefs” (p.5). Personally, authenticity means being true to myself and embracing the individuality and uniqueness I bring to the table.
Plus, I want to ensure I am consistent and diligent throughout my career. My persevering work ethic has always been an integral part of my personality, and I’ve always tended to thoroughly complete work with an immense amount of thought and evaluation. In my career, this personality trait allows me to complete all tasks expected of me promptly. Galla, et al. (2020) performed a study to observe diligence in individuals and its correlation to mindfulness: “To the extent that mindfulness supports adaptive functioning in the face of stress and unpleasant emotions, then it also makes theoretical sense that it could be associated with performance in affectively-charged, but not necessarily highly evaluative, learning environments.” (p.58). With this stated, I have also seen that true diligence is conceivable and most valuable when achieving mindfulness. This concept is present in my past work as a freelancer for professional writing agencies. While working for these companies for six-plus months, I went above and beyond to mindfully speak with clients and complete work on time to ensure satisfaction, even when there was an alternative. I apply this diligence to my current and future endeavors as well.
Lastly, I value focusing on diverse projects that challenge my creativity and uncover new perspectives from individuals in cultures enriched with beautiful traditions. This attribute is essential since “creativity has a triple implication: as a concept that informs what we are looking for when studying journalism, a guide for the range of research methods at our disposal, as well as an inspiration for the kinds of stories we can tell about our projects” (Witschge, et al., 2019, p.20).
As I reflect on my past experiences and where I am in my academic and career journey, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of enthusiasm. With the authenticity, diligence, and creativity I strive to implement into my life and career, I am excited about the types of projects I will complete and contribute to in the upcoming years. I eagerly wait to discover how these projects will challenge me in the best ways and allow me to entertain, educate, and connect with my audience.
